Library Materials Selection Process

The responsibility and criteria for selection of resources in the library follows the direction of SD64 Procedure 510 #2-5

As described in the procedure, it is the responsibility of the school’s administrator and teacher-librarian professional staff to provide learning resources that support the curriculum, stimulate growth in factual knowledge, literary appreciation and aesthetic values and develop analytical skills.

A range of learning resources are provided, including those with differing points of view, varying levels of difficulty, diversity of interest and appeal, diversity of ethnic, religious, cultural and minority representation, and local interest.

Principle is placed above personal opinion and reason above prejudice in the selection of materials of the highest quality in order to assure a comprehensive collection appropriate to the school community.

In selecting learning resources, professional staff evaluate materials. Reputable selection aids are consulted, including provincial resource review organizations, and book reviewing journals for librarians.  Whenever possible, the actual resource is examined.

In selecting resources, the criteria include consistency with the educational goals of the province and district, and the school's needs. Resources shall support and enrich curriculum, taking in the varied needs of the students. Learning resources shall be chosen in order to support students to gain awareness of our pluralistic society. Resources shall be selected to present various sides of controversial issues so that students may have the opportunity to develop, under guidance, the practice of critical thinking. Resources shall be selected that have Canadian content or relevancy whenever possible.

Recommendations for resources for consideration for the library collection can be made by various sources: students, school staff, district staff or the public.  To make a recommendation of a resource that fits our selection criteria, please email one of our teacher-librarians.

Gifts of resources can be considered using the same selection criteria. To enquire about donating resources to the library, please email one of our teacher-librarians.
